Halloween Recap

Here's a little photo recap of our Halloween! Our weekend was absolutely great - full of fun times and wonderful family and friends. We had a blast getting all dressed up and being silly for a couple of hours. We seem to enjoy doing this more and more as the years go by and everyone participates just a little bit more every year. We have our huge weenie roast, homemade chili, chips and dip, cupcakes, candy, tons of prizes to collect along the scavenger hunt for the kids, and our big hay ride finale. SO much fun!

After the party, the cousins came home with my kiddos to spend the night. They still had plenty of energy to spend, so bowling in the hallway, chasing each other with sticky ghouls, eating more candy, and laughing together into the early morning hours is what they did while I sat back and watched them make some really awesome childhood memories. We ended up with a living room FULL of mattresses and six super tired, snoring kids. Who knew little ones could snore so loud?! Funny!

So, that's it....the big bash is over and the only thing that remains is the mountain of candy. If all works out well, I'll go grab the little hidden stashes this morning and go through them, putting away the large majority and bring out just a little at a time.

Now why do I feel like the Christmas holidays just made a startling appearance? Seriously! There are only 52 days until Christmas....Oh My! I almost feel the urge to get the decorations out of the attic and I actually wrote the words "Christmas gifts" on my shopping list for this week. Time flies - it really does. So much to do, so little time ;)

Happy Monday!

Simplicity

simple things

The simple things in life:

quiet mornings
a good cup of coffee
mornings spent teaching my children
afternoon conversations
sunlight streaming in the windows
gentle breezes
line-dried clothes
the sound of happy children
smiling faces
wholesome foods
dinner at the table
playing Clue with the family
a clean kitchen at the end of the day
clean sheets
a good night's sleep

these are the daily, simple things that make life so grand.
the little things that add up to be the biggest thing of all.....My Life.
i love my full, busy, happy, and simple life.

********************************

This is my entry for last week's Lens.Us.Together. theme, Simplicity.

Last week went by in the blink of an eye! I really don't know where time is going anymore. October is basically over and Christmas catalogs are filling the mailbox everyday. Ack! Sometimes I really wish I could slow down those hands of time just a little. I can't seem to find time for anything lately. My poor camera keeps calling my name, Flickr is patiently waiting for the occasional upload, I'd love to join in with Self Portrait Challenge for November (but am wondering how I'll fit it in), oh - and that's not to mention my beloved blog(s).

I think that because we opted to school all summer so that we could take our break this winter instead, it has put us at our "end of the year crunch." We have just a little left to do, but that little is filling our days entirely with lots of work and review. We should completely wrap things
up by the third week of November, conveniently in time for Thanksgiving, Christmas
and hunting season ;) They can't wait and neither can I!

I am really looking forward to our break, the free time at the holidays, the slower pace because of it, the time my boys get to spend with their dad doing their most favorite thing in the world - hunting, extra kitchen time and holiday planning with my girls. Fun times ahead...if we can just make it through these next few weeks!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

Happy Fall, Ya'll!

Fall is a happy time of year don't you think? Everything is so vibrant, the leaves are dancing, the light is perfect, the afternoon shadows seem to have a life of their own. I love this time of year and so many times I wish that our southern autumns were just a little more colorful and cool. We bounce back and forth between hot and humid to downright cold. We wear shorts one day and coats the next. Our fall isn't a steady stream of loveliness by any means, but when things seem to line up and the weather is ideal, it is mighty fine.

The kids had a blast the other day making our back porch scarecrow. An old pair of overalls, a flannel shirt, a straw hat, along with some hay and burlap, and they made a really cute back door fellow :) It's always so much fun to create these scarecrows!

Halloween is this weekend and my kids absolutely cannot wait. We always have a big bonfire with hotdogs, homemade chili, plenty of desserts and of course, candy. All the family and our really close neighbors come over, dress up, and have a great night of fun. This year my kiddos are going to be Ariel the mermaid (Claire), a scary masked man (Ethan), an old troll....SO cute (Isaac), my hubby will pick an old mask from the dress up box - probably the bearded wizard, and Emma and me are going to be just a little witchy this year. I can't wait....it's going to be so much fun :)

We usually take the kids on a hay ride down our little dirt road through the neighborhood and they stop at a few neighbors' houses. This year, I'm planning a Halloween Scavenger Hunt for my kiddos and a few of the cousins that will be joining us. I did this last year for my kids and they had the best time. I used the general ideas from this website, changing just a few things to meet our needs. I've got treats planned for each clue and I'm hoping that the weather won't be too cool to have a scavenger-hunt-finale of bobbing for apples. That is fun to do and to watch - those apples are hard to get!

Things I Love About Autumn

I love autumn. It is my favorite season. I love the change of seasons, the colors, the light.

In Season

I love the cool mornings and evenings

I love the seasonal fruits...apples, pears, pumpkins, winter squash, and greens.

stacking...

I love the soups and stews and casseroles that seem to taste better this time of year.

I love silly little kids who seem to feel refreshed in the cooler air. They spend nearly every afternoon playing together outside, laughing and having such a good time with each other, running around and around the house, playing hide and go seek, playing kick ball, and anything else they can think of until the darkness makes them come inside.

I love it when I can pull on a sweater and cozy up with my afternoon cup. I really can't wait until it's cold enough to light a fire in the fireplace. That always makes everything seem so comfortable and homey. This is definitely a nesting season for me. Everything seems to turn inward....home, family, and cozy-togetherness.

Yes. It's definitely my favorite time of year. How about you? What are some of the things you love about autumn?

How Are You?

It's been a while. I know that I haven't been around much. Things have been busy for me and time seems to be flying by. I'm not sure where all the days and weeks are going. Autumn seemed to make a very early and very short appearance. Although I can see the signs of the changing seasons, the temperatures and humidity as of late would have me believe it's still August. I am so ready for our breezes to blow in from the north rather than from the gulf. I am soooo ready to build our first fire in the fire place, to make more soups and stews for dinner, to pull out the sweaters and jackets, to pitch the tent in the back yard for little camp outs with the kids and have more of our "weenie roasts." Really, I can't wait.

She tapped her finger & nothing happened & she thought she had lost her magic, but it had only changed & it took her awhile to figure it out.

I've been making due with picking fall wildflowers, watching the blooms fade from the last of summer's flowers, just sitting and letting my eyes absorb the fabulous change in light that occurs this time of year, taking time to enjoy my coffee (or pomegranate green tea) every afternoon (yep, I can't give it up...who am I kidding?).

My husband's birthday was Tuesday and the kids helped to decorate a halloween themed party with the full benefit being that there was no need to un-decorate! He had a cake decorated with jack-o-lanterns and plastic cockroaches...yep! The cockroach idea was my contribution, lol! He hates those things....and that is an understatement! We had a blast playing around with him and he thought it was pretty funny, too, especially the little roachy critter that we I stuck inside his piece of cake...awful, I know - but it was really SO funny :) I just hope he goes easy on me....for tomorrow is my birthday!

Good for the body is the work of the body, and good for the soul is the work of the soul, and good for either is the work of the other. ~Henry David Thoreau

I've taken time to clean out my computer files, or rather about 3,500 photos taking up space in my little connection to the world. After I uploaded the wedding photos from last weekend, I thought the poor thing would burst open! Seriously! She went crazy, started beeping, had a black out, and how she held up long enough for me to clean her out, I'll never know, lol! Anyway, she's a few pounds lighter now and is feeling much better I think. This is just a good lesson for me about procrastinating about getting my photos uploaded to a storage site as well as actually using my external hard drive. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to squeak by unharmed.

These are little packets of light & you need to plant them early in the year & remember to mark where they were because lots of times they look like weeds in the beginning & it's not until later that you see how beautiful they really are.

So how have you all been? I've missed my time visiting with you all. I'm hoping to be back on track soon. I think it's funny to realize how each of my bloggy friends are just that...friends. I think of you all so often and love being able to Facebook with some of you, too. {by the way....I added a Facebook badge to my upper left sidebar in case you'd like to join me there. just be sure to let me know who you are...you know how fb is funny about names} It keeps us connected even when we can't find the time to blog. All the emails and well-wishes and comments and messages never go unappreciated even though I have a hard time getting around to responding to them lately.

A nice cup of tea or coffee with my bloggy friends would be so wonderful. Maybe one of these days..... :) But, until then a nice cup of afternoon brew along with a little blog commenting and Facebook chatting will have to do. I'm just so very glad that you're all here.

long conversations with friends...
Have a great weekend, friends!

my flower girl

I wanted to share some photos of our niece's wedding last weekend in which my little Emma was the flower girl. She was so excited to be in this wedding and was not at all hesitant about walking down the aisle.

The church was beautiful,

the colors were beautiful

the bridesmaids

the bride was absolutely gorgeous.

Here's my girl...so happy to finally be able to put on her
princess dress and do her thing!

Ms. Emma

She had the best time participating in the wedding and
dressing up and attending the showers and parties.
She did so well...just perfectly. I was one proud Mama :)

After the wedding we went to the reception and it was
just as beautiful. Everything was fall-inspired and covered in
beautiful afternoon sunlight. It couldn't have been better.

After a long, beautiful day and a fun-filled afternoon
with family and friends to celebrate their
new life together, the bride and groom took off in style.

We wish them every happiness.
