on these icky, rainy, gray days. days when we're all taking turns being sick again & having headaches....days when you'd almost rather be "headless."

days when there's really nothing better to do than read a little, watch a few movies, cook some lentil soup, and wait for the icky-ness to go away and the sun to shine again.

Nothing Says Spring Like New Chicks!

Oh yes.....we have quite a few new additions this spring! We bought 17 new chicks at our local feed & seed store and ordered another 20. We bought Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and put our order in for some White Rocks and Cornish X Rock broilers. Yes, I said broilers. After taking some time to think carefully about it earlier this year, we decided to go ahead and give it a try.

our new babies

chicky feet ;)

We're starting with a dozen broilers and we'll see how it goes. If all goes well, we'll reorder and do it again. These other 20 or so hens will be for eggs. After lots of reading up on chickens, these specific breeds seem to be the best year round egg layers. Once they get started we should have enough eggs to supply the neighborhood, lol!

I love it when at Easter time we have about 100 or so eggs saved up for fun! The brown speckled eggs make by far the prettiest Easter eggs - the color is much richer. This is the first Easter in several years that we haven't had our own eggs, so I'll be really happy when these girls start laying this fall!

tiny feathers

so tiny

Right now, for the couple of weeks that they are cute little chicks, we'll time spend playing with them, feeding and watering them, keeping them warm, keeping them protected, letting them peck around in the grass until they're big enough to move into the big girl pens, and taking pictures because they'll be big girls in a flash!

I Took A Little Break...

collection of vintage quilts unintended break, but I got a lot accomplished! This week has been full in a great way and there was lots of spring cleaning going on. Yep. I think spring fever has hit me and I've begun the very much needed spring clean up and clean out!

living room

Everything is having its turn being moved, wiped, washed, dusted, packed away, moved out, donated, organized, gone through.......and I mean everything. The blinds, the curtains, the blankets, the bed linens...all washed.

antique rocker

The closets, the dressers, the clothing left over from last summer, all gone through and separated with some to keep and some to give away. The little trinkets and do-dads collected over time (you know those dust collectors)have been dusted, the enormous piles of photos were organized, the boxes of photo frame "parts" that have me wondering what I was thinking, have been tossed; the papers, letters, cards, and little mementos that were overflowing from the storage box they were in - all done......everything!

a little peg rack

My sewing table was uncluttered and the fabric sorted and folded. My patterns were reorganized and I found a few goodies that I forgot I had ;) Now with a clean space to work, my excuses are running out, lol!

sewing table

My bedroom was in need of some new curtains and I've been thinking about what to put in here....something simple and clean looking, similar to a valance, and then I remembered the antique pillowcases that I had folded away in my linen closet. Voila! They worked like a charm! I have four fairly small bedroom windows and I just took these pillowcases and draped them over the curtain rods and had instant valances! I like the vintage look and the simple white on my windows...especially this time of year. The best part is that they were free!

And, even though we still have very minor cosmetic details to finish in the everlasting bathroom remodel....I thought I'd share this photo. The cabinets are white, the walls are very light yellow, I added a few red accessories and red rugs. Now just to add some white switchplates and a few paint touch ups and we're done!

newly remodeled bathroom

So, now you can see why I didn't have one bloggy minute to spare this week :) I did upload a few pics to Flickr to keep up with my gratitude {365} blog and that was the extent of my computer time. I'm still not totally finished with the house and still have a few somewhat major areas I'd like to reorganize next week. I just hope my spring fever-induced energy spurt holds out, lol!

A New Skirt

Yes. I did some sewing! The weather has been warming nicely and quickly, as typical around here. My oldest girl has grown so much since last summer that there is no way she's going to be using any of last years clothes. And, as I've browsed the clothing section each week during my grocery trip, I just haven't found anything that I've been happy with for her. The fit is always too tight, too low cut, the skirts and shorts are entirely too she has been down to nothing more than a pair of athletic pants and a pair of jeans from fall that are verging on bursting at the seams, lol! Then, during a little blog-browsing the other day, I saw these adorable skirts and knew they would be perfect for spring and summer around here. I must thank Randi for the inspiration and the link to the tutorial for this super-easy-to-make skirt!

on the go...

After determining the measurements I'd need for my girl, the length turned out to be perfect, it's not too twirly and full, it's not "in the way," and it's just right for the warmer days we've been having. I can't think of a better way to use up all the little pieces of fabric that I have left over! The fabric combinations could be endless :) I am very happy with it and will hopefully have a selection ready for her this weekend.....and for my littlest girl, too :)

right now

have a seat.

i'm up early, as usual

watching the sun peek through the clouds

anticipating another warm, sunny spring day

hearing the birds chirp in anticipation, too

smelling the cool, sweet air coming through my window

feeling better as the days get longer and warmer

drinking coffee with chocolate whipped cream - mmm

wanting to take a day away with my camera

intending to make my girls some skirts today

listening to this song and this artist...many times now :)

enjoying bringing art back into our daily lives

wondering how productive our garden will be this year

loving my hubby and thinking of how great a date night would be

looking at the bright pink and fuchsia azaleas blooming right outside the window

wanting to visit the local gardens before the azalea blooms fade

remembering what a great day I had with my boys yesterday

hoping to accomplish some personal goals I have set for myself

believing that dreams really are achievable

cherishing the moments I've been given

feeling thankful for great friends, both online and off :)

feeling grateful for those of you who spend a moment of your busy days visiting me

and I'm wishing you all a lovely Tuesday!

Weekend Creativity

There was a lot of this type of creative concentration going on
around our house this weekend.

We all spent time outside in the fresh, beautiful, warm air....
observing and drawing, then painting in with our watercolor pencils,
all the things that we each found interesting.

busy hands

We ended up with lots of great drawings and colorings along with
some really bright and cheery watercolor paintings.
On the photo below, Claire's version of a parade is positioned at
top left, Isaac's version of a dandelion is at top right, Ethan drew and painted
detailed leaves blowing in the wind at bottom left, and Emma painted a
springtime ladybug.

weekend watercolor

At the girls' requests, I drew and painted a red daisy,
possibly to be framed and hung on the bathroom wall, and a
"sunshine man," who fit the theme of the weekend perfectly.

mommy art

Hope your weekend was also warmer, sunnier, and full of creative goodness!

It's that time of year again...

gardening books

Yep. Today we planted our garden. I thought we'd be doing more painting in our slowly-being-finished bathroom re-do, but no. Gardening it was :) Hubby had been working on tilling the soil and it was all prepared, so we headed out to the local feed and seed store for our veggie seeds and plants.

We had to visit the poultry nursery for a while when we were there. Look at those little peeps! I loved the coloring on these little chicks. I thought they looked like they had on little masks. And, how cute is a kiddie pool full of little ducklings....if only I had the right place for them to live...sigh.

little peeps!

We gathered our plants and seeds and came home to get busy.

from a long day of gardening

On our list...

lettuce seed √
kale seed √
broccoli seed √
okra seed √
green bean seed √
sunflower seed √
various flower seed √
tomato plants √
jalapeno plants √
squash seed √

this will be lettuce :)

With a few packets of seeds and little manual labor, we had everything off to a good start.

little gardener...

Everything has been planted and now begins the "wait." The kids will be excited to see what comes up first and I will be excited to see what I can harvest first! I can't wait for that platter of fresh tomatoes with every meal, the fresh green beans sauteed with garlic, the piles of fresh lettuce and squash.....mmmmmm!

sunflowers and jalapenos. planted.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and this year's garden will provide lots of goodies for our table.

So, do you plant a garden or at least a few patio pots with a few goodies? Have you already planted? What's on tap for your weekend?

Have a great one!

...the sunshine called joy

...the sunshine called joy

"I've spent most of my life walking under that hovering cloud, jealousy, whose acid raindrops blurred my vision and burned holes in my heart. Once I learned to use the umbrella of confidence, the skies cleared up for me and the sunshine called joy became my faithful companion."
~Astrid Alauda

Just sharing my entry from this month's new theme at Self Portrait Challenge, Headless. Also, taking some time to take a closer look at me this month...looking for renewed motivation, joy, strength, clarity, and balance. Those are things I've been desperately needing lately.
