a productive day

breakfast this morning

Yes. That was breakfast out on our porch this morning :)

Hubby was off work, so I made breakfast and brought it outside in the fresh air for us to eat. Maybe this good start to the morning is why I was so productive today ;-D

After breakfast and browsing some of my favorite crafty blogs looking for some motivation, I finally blew the dust off of these poor, neglected little friends:

back to sewing :)

Yes. I actually did some sewing today!

I know....I'm a little shocked at myself ;) My crafting urge seemed to have got up and left after Christmas and I was wondering if I was ever going to find it again. But, find it, I did!

And a new curtain for my almost-finished remodeled bathroom :)

new curtains

The bathroom is painted a light butter yellow with white trim and I thought just a hint of red accent in the room would be perfect for what I had in mind. I was going for simplicity with this valance. I only wanted the valance and some new blinds on my window, letting in as much light as possible during the day. So, with some white muslin and a final running stitch in red at the hem, I was pleased with the way it turned out. (I promise to post some photos of the finished room as soon as it is totally complete.)

Now I just have to wait for my paint to dry around my window so I can hang it up ;)

What paint?

This paint....

After I spent the morning making the curtain I turned my attention to the paintbrush and turned these old brown cabinet doors to a clean and simple white. I also needed to finish painting around the window and while I was at it I went into the other bathroom and put a new coat of white on the trim work in there, too!

I know, I was full of surprises today and really got a lot of needed work done while poor hubby worked outside with my boys all day, doing a not-so-pleasant job of working on pipes and digging a really big hole....but that's another post, lol!

Anyhoo....lots accomplished today and still lots on my to-do list. At least I was able to cross off a few things that have been lingering in the back of my mind for far too long.

I just hope tomorrow is as productive as today :)

Introduce Myself...Week 3

This is my submission to week 3 of Self Portrait Challenge that I've been sharing here on the blog ;)

pieces of me

This week I'll tell some random things about myself.....the pieces of me that fit together.

I like to get up very early in the morning
I also like to stay up late at night....maybe that's why I don't get much sleep ;)
I've never seen "real" snow
I don't like much jewelry...the simpler the better
I love chocolate
I hate shopping for myself
I love shopping for my kids
I don't drink soda
I love iced tea
I didn't drink coffee until after my twins were born, then it became necessary to make it through the day :)
I need time alone like I need air to breathe
I don't like big crowds
I have 2 younger brothers and no sisters
I love reading and writing
I usually dress in dark colors....never light colors or anything pastel
I love my husband
I'm happily married
I'm always very self conscious
I try not to be
I'd love to be more outgoing
But feel more at ease being a loner
I don't like cliques or feeling like I need to fit in
Sometimes, I make a point not to fit in just to prove that I don't have to ;)
I have always lived in rural south Alabama
I love it here
However, I hate our humid summers
I tend to over-think just about everything
My mind never stops
I wish I had learned how to play the guitar
and the piano
I love music....all kinds
I've always been fascinated by far back as I can remember, photos of all kinds have captured me

*So, there you have it ..... just a random sprinkle of me!

mr. february

"The flowers of late winter and early spring
occupy places in our hearts well out of proportion
to their size." ~Gertrude S. Wister

mr. february, oh how you make me long for the bright and warm days of spring

why do you leave me feeling so uninspired every year?

maybe it's because you take all the color of life with festive color left from the holidays and seemingly so long before the first bright blooms of next month

all desire to create slowly drains from me during your long stay...every.year.

i search for inspiration but can't find anything but dead grass, dirt, tattered leaves, firewood debris, frost bitten ferns.....all brown, all dead

i carry my camera with me, deliberately seeking for signs of life, for some color, for anything pretty.....

until today.

i did find these pink beauties smiling at me from the fresh flower counter and had to have them i love color, bright and cheery

the delicate petals, the soft floral scent, the long stems in my favorite glass vase...

these make you, mr. february, a little more tolerable

i suppose i can tolerate the last long weeks of winter and use them for rest and rejuvenation rather than speed-crafting, planning overload, and the constant run-around that spring and summer will inevitably bring.....

i can tolerate the last colorless days of winter knowing God's bountiful show of color, life-giving warmth, longer days, and warm rains to nourish the ground are on the way

i can think ahead to all the days i can fill with flower planting, flip flops, kids playing outside, capris, park days, relaxing on the backyard swing, morning walks, late evening walks after supper, cold glasses of sweet tea, fresh salad greens, fresh sliced tomatoes with every meal, sweet strawberries....

yes, i know all the things i love about the rest of the year wouldn't seem so dear to me if it weren't for you bringing me to rock bottom

but, because i have made a commitment to strive for excellence in my life this year, i will try very hard to see your presence as more of a blessing, the blessing of another year, the blessing of very quiet days spent inside, the blessing of rest, the blessing of time to read more than i normally do, the blessing of reading to my kids even more, the blessing of cold temps in contrast to the summer heat, the blessing of knowing that you are just a part of this cycle that i can't imagine doing without

okay.....i'm all better now :)

How about you? Are you a fan of Mr. February.....or not?

Introducing Myself......

February's theme over at Self Portrait Challenge is Introduce Yourself. So, I thought I'd play along this month on my blog as well. This shot was taken just a few days ago and I thought I'd use it for my first entry.

This week I'll start by saying that I joined with SPC in June 2008. I can't really remember where I found SPC, but watched the entries from week to week for a very long time, becoming more and more eager to give it a try for myself. I started and it just clicked for me, I enjoyed it as I became more and more comfortable with seeing myself in photos. Before I started these self portraits, there were really very few photos of me. Very few.

I think my main motivation in doing SPC was to make myself more comfortable with seeing me. I never felt good about seeing myself in any way photos, no videos, only a mirror when I had to ensure I looked presentable to leave the house, lol! But over the course of the last year, losing quite a few pounds (i'm happy to report that's in forward motion again ;), seeing myself in a different light through the spc themes, blogging, making new friends, sharing pieces of the real me here and there, letting more people "in," not caring about any preconceived notions that other people may have about me, not trying to impress-but just being me..... it has made all the difference in my life. All these things have offered hope and peace and clarity and I know that spc has had a definite impact along all those lines :)

I'm really happy with spc and so happy to have made a few great friends because of it :)
